About seaglass

Seaglass (also commonly know as 'beach glass' or 'mermaids tears') is glass that you find along beaches or large lakes  which has been tumbled and naturally weathered by the sea.

This creates lovely small pieces of smooth frosted glass each piece completely unique.

Most seaglass comes from bottles, but it can also come from jars, plates, windows, windshields, glasses, art, flasks, containers, and any glass sources that have wound up in the ocean.

Real vs artificial

Seaglass can also be produced artificially by using a rock tumbler, and some companies sell artificially produced seaglass to tourists or make jewelry from it. As littering is increasingly discouraged, authentic seaglass becomes harder and harder to find and artificial seaglass is sometimes fraudulently advertised as authentic. Rock tumbled glass is not the same as seaglass, since long-term exposure to water conditions creates an etched surface on the glass that cannot be duplicated artificially. The differences can be distinguished microscopically.

Seaglass collectors claim that the term "seaglass" should be reserved for authentic specimens, and artificial seaglass should be termed "craft glass".

For me, and I'm sure many others, it's the romance behind the seaglass that is part of it's attraction. The fact that there is a history about it and the fact that its created by mother nature over many years from what would previously have been considered rubbish.

I collect all the seaglass I use in my jewellery (with help from members of my family), it has been gathered from various beaches in particular Cayton bay and Filey on the east coast, the Isle of Sheppy in Kent and Wemyss bay and surrounding isles in scotland.

It has taken a lot of time an effort, although I must admit I do love walking along the beaches and finding new and unusual pieces. Its a great deal of fun!
